About Southeast School
Welcome to Southeast Elementary School!
Southeast is a home away from home for 160 students and neighborhood families. We have earned a reputation as a top school in the state and we work hard to ensure that our children receive academic, emotional and social support, while also providing a physical environment that allows everyone to feel safe and secure. For four consecutive years, 2015-2018, Southeast School has been recognized as a Connecticut School of Distinction, an award showcasing schools that are performing in the top 10% in the state, as well as achieving growth targets for our demographic subgroups. While Covid-19 continues to impact schools across the country, we have been able to keep our schools open to maximize learning opportunities for our students.
Faculty
The faculty at Southeast are outstanding educators who are passionate about teaching, learning, and children! Through professional development, we stay current with educational best practice and are delivering engaging, high-quality instruction every day. Our priority is developing classrooms that embed 21st-century learning opportunities and skills. Southeast teachers and staff are motivated to work collaboratively to raise the achievement of students and maintain the excellent reputation that Southeast School proudly holds in the community.
Instructional Approach
Southeast School uses the most current approaches to instruction and assessment. We start each day with a 25-minute block of Morning Meeting. We use the work of Responsive Classroom and our students to develop greetings, songs, sharing and activities that help students build relationships and emotional skills. Each day also has a reading and a writing workshop block that is student-centered, meaning it is focused on teaching into the district reading and writing skill progressions based on where each child is currently performing, while also providing access to grade level material through mini-lessons. Developing a love of reading, with sustained engagement, in addition to building foundational skills and comprehension, are the primary foci of the workshop block.
In math, we use the Bridges program to help students build computational fluency and mathematical reasoning. Science and/or Social Students are taught 1.5 hours weekly, focus on inquiry strategies, and are additional opportunities for students to build their 21st-century learning opportunities.
21st-Century Learning
The Mansfield/Southeast approach to 21st-century learning focuses on developing five areas, which are intricately connected to one another:
- Citizens of the World
- Collaboration
- Communication
- Creativity
- Critical Thinking
Schoolwide Enrichment Model
Southeast's curricular approach is also founded in the philosophy of the Schoolwide Enrichment Model created by University of Connecticut's Doctors Joseph Renzulli and Sally Reis. We provide opportunities for students to excel through building on academic and individual strengths and interests. We engage in Schoolwide Enrichment Clusters, bringing together students and teachers who have similar areas of interest. This creates a unique and rich learning environment for both the teacher and students and further develops the passion and skills of a Mansfield graduate.
Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO)
Our PTO is the golden thread that supports our successful partnership. If you are a member of our community, please become active and help us continue to grow together. We are a dedicated community of students, teachers, and parents working together to provide all children with a positive and productive school experience.
