[ARCHIVED] It's Water Safety Month!

May Water Safety Month

May is WATER SAFETY MONTH!

Mansfield Park & Recreation would like to recognize May as National Water Safety Month. We want to ensure that every member of your family becomes water competent.

 drownings mostly may to august

This means:

  • Being water smart
  • Having swimming skills
  • Knowing how to (safely) help others.

Children and adults should learn to swim so they, at minimum, achieve the skills of water competency: to be able to enter the water, get a breath, stay afloat, change position, swim a distance and then get out of the water safely.

The swim program at the Mansfield Community Center focuses on water safety and swimming techniques. It is important to follow the Circle of Drowning Prevention. Below are some tips to keep you and your family safe around the water:

  • Provide close and constant attention to children you are supervising in or near water
  • Fence pools and spas with adequate barriers, including four-sided fencing
  • Learn swimming and water survival skills
  • Children, inexperienced swimmers, and all boaters should wear U.S. Coast Guard-approved life jackets
  • Always swim in a lifeguarded area.
