Conversations that occur between people in random public settings have beneficial effects on everybody’s mental health. Just saying hello or smiling at another person, whether you know them or not, makes you feel connected. The Human Rights Commission is launching a long term effort to encourage people to say hello to each other as part of our effort to support human rights in Mansfield. The more we speak with each other, the better we will get to know each other. Human rights are most likely to be valued if empathy is a significant element in our relationships. Empathy involves understanding other people and treating them with respect. In most faith traditions, this is considered the “Golden Rule.” Without empathy, human rights struggle to become a community value.
HRC is planning several programs for this fall to support community conversations and encourage empathy, including a multicultural story hour and a multi-faith panel discussion with opportunities for participants to ask questions and explore their own views on faith. HRC is happy to accept suggestions for additional community conversations from any members of our community. Please visit our table at Celebrate Mansfield and pick up a pin that shows off the new icon for the Human Rights Commission – and say hello to everybody else who is visiting with us.
Look for one of our stickers around Town. Please wear it, and give someone the gift of a smile!
